Addressng the "YOU Fund Me" Mentality

It has probably been a week now since I published the podcast and Vlog on this topic. That is one reason I really suggest that you listen/watch those along with reading this article. I do not have a script that I follow and, due to the time that has gone by, there will definitely be some different and/or additional thoughts on this topic that you won't get by just accessing this topic via one channel.

This thought all came about from what I witnessed one day a little over a week ago. Sure, I'm used to seeing people with signs asking for donations standing by the entrance/exit to one particular store that I go to at least once a week. However, on this particular day, I exited this store by a different way and found a guy holding up a sign that said, "EMERGENCY" across the top with an elderly person wrapped up in blankets and in a wheelchair a few feet away. I slowed down for a moment thinking that this might be a real emergency and then read the rest of his sign, "Cancer Co-Payment Needed".

Others - including my wife - told me that they have seen this same guy with the same "EMERGENCY" word scribbled at the top of a sign but with different "needs" addressed on the rest of the sign.  One thing I thought was, "If this was a REAL emergency, I think he would likely find other ways to try to raise the money besides standing where he was holding up a sign".

One thing I thought was that he might even try one of those "YOU Fund Me" approaches that I see others use so often. (Now, obviously, I have changed the name of one particular source, but I think you get the idea).

Long story short, I went to the main page of this "YOU Fund Me" group and read several "success stories" of some that had used this approach and I became a bit frustrated.

DISCLAIMER: Yes, I do know and understand that, at times, this is a valuable tool to help with certain needs.

However, I noticed many that featured people that received this type of funding for things that weren't necessities but, rather,  "wants".  Yes, they may have been "noble" or even "honest" but they were things that people used to accept the responsibility of raising the wanted funds themselves.

For example, one "success story" featured a young lady that had received funding to further her education while another featured a young man that belonged to an organization of "scouts" that had received funding for a particular project that he needed to do with this organization. Both of these situations are "desires" or "wants" and not necessities. No, higher education is not a "right" or even an absolute necessity. It is a desire - yes, a "noble" or worthy desire - but, again, one that people used to do whatever they had to do to accomplish the funding of that desire.

WHY?

This mentality and approach is killing our society in the United States of America and, it doesn't matter where you are from, it will kill your society as well if allowed to take root in the mindset of it's people.

This goes along closely with one of my recent articles, "Water Your Own Grass". If you've not read it yet, take the time to do so.

Yes, we are here to help each other along the way but, friend, we MUST NOT expect others to take care of things for us in our own lives that we can - and should - take care of ourselves.

We need to teach the RESPECT and PRIDE to our children that comes in putting in the effort that it takes to ACHIEVE these things on our own even though, at times, it may be difficult.

Again, please take the time to listen and/or watch the podcast and/or Vlog (links below) on this topic for much more discussion.

There is a sense of accomplishment that is being neglected when we look to others to fulfill our efforts for things that we want in our lives and, yes, even those things that we need.

Think about it and, until next time, be sure to...

Your GREATEST Education

This is "Wide-Open Wednesday"...experience the EXCITEMENT of
today's POSSIBILITY for YOU!

Following the process that I have done over the past two blogs and podcasts, I want to continue today by talking about another one of my "catch phrases" - this is one that you hear at the start of each of my podcasts: "Your greatest education takes place on the campus of your mind."

What do you think of when you read or hear the word, "education"? Most of us would think of an image like the one you find with this blog or, maybe, you have an image of a large building with large columns out front. You may even think about that certificate hanging on the wall of your doctor, lawyer or even your own wall that has a lot of letters following the name on that certificate.

Hey, can I be blunt? (Like I really need to ask your permission, right? Maybe I'm just giving fair warning that it's coming.) I've met a LOT of very DUMB "intellectual" people and I've also met a lot of SMART "uneducated" people - haven't you?

Sure, one may have a higher I.Q. than the other and one may do better on some sort of test than another but, let's get real here - education does NOT have to be confined to the classroom! As I discuss the first half of this catch phrase, I want to take a moment to consider that your GREATEST education is the education that you gain by living LIFE - each and every day.

We've all heard of the "school of hard knocks" and, there is a lot of TRUTH in that phrase, isn't there? You've likely also heard that "common sense is not so common" and, my guess is, you've likely seen that demonstrated by some of those around you as well.

LIFE IS TOUGH! There are "ups" and there are "downs" and, if you live long enough you realize that life goes in cycles with these ups and downs. So, as we continue to live and gain experience through these ups and downs we learn how to HANDLE these and how to pull through to the other side. The "low times" don't stay around for ever and, just as important for us to realize, the "high times/good times" don't always last forever either!

As we experience these things and go through life we should no longer be surprised or shocked at the cyclical nature of life, right? BUT HOW MANY STILL ARE and how many are still unprepared for this fact of life? Some people NEVER learn!

Yeah, that's right - they FAIL in their education of life!

When I discuss the second half of this phrase I will talk about the importance of what we put in our minds and how it relates to making it through this cycle, so be sure to come back for that. But for now - ARE YOU LEARNING EVERY SINGLE DAY?

Each day is WIDE OPEN (yeah, I'm going back to the "tag line" for today) for us to absorb as much as we can. There is so much available for us... so many people just waiting to teach us a lesson. Wow, I'm sure when you just read that it may have struck you in a negative way. We don't like the idea or phrase, "I'm here to teach you a lesson" because it's usually some sort of threat.

THINK ABOUT IT! If we will but open our eyes to the people that we come across each and every day we will realize (IF we open our eyes and are willing to see and learn) what a great opportunity we have to LEARN from so many....an endless and continuous supply!

Will you take advantage of this education? ARE YOU taking advantage of this education? If not, why not?

No, you won't necessarily get a certificate on your wall with your name on it and a bunch of letters behind it but you WILL be well educated in one of the toughest subjects that we ALL "take" - LIFE!

Again, be sure to join me tomorrow for the second half of this phrase as I discuss the importance of the "library" that we have in our mind.

As always, be sure to listen to the podcast that goes along with this (iTunes - http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/mike-spillmans-future-you/id423660739 or my RSS feed - http://mikespillman.hipcast.com/rss/futureyouuniversity.xml )

The opportunity for your greatest education awaits you TODAY...live and learn and, until next time, be sure to...

50th Podcast: "What's YOUR Specialty?"

Today - after a long, extended weekend away - I finally get back to our discussion of Napoleon Hill's classic, "Think & Grow Rich".

We focus on chapter 5 entitled: "Specialized Knowledge" - the 4th step on your journey to "riches".

Here's the main focus on the little bit that I discuss in today's podcast --- are you gaining "specialized" knowledge OR are you "specializing" in gaining "general knowledge"?

What do I mean by that? First of all, Mr. Hill points out that there are two kinds of knowledge - general knowledge (like you gain from attending school/college) and specialized knowledge (putting your knowledge to use for a "specialized" - or specific - purpose).

Too many people are "specializing in gaining general knowledge" - they are spending all of their time gaining one degree after another but never take that step to put all of that "education" and "knowledge" to work or use for the benefit of others. Do you know anyone like that? Are YOU that type of person?

I discuss how I have known people that seem to have "hid" in college. They didn't really want to leave the comfort of college and step out into the real world. They had the routine down - learn to study, study, pass the tests and get your degree and they feared stepping out of that comfort zone.

Sound familiar? We've discussed this same type of idea in an early podcast entitled: "Why Not Now?" Plans and/or education is good - even great and absolutely necessary! However, there comes a time when we MUST step out and put those plans and that education into practice!

Has your specialty become learning and planning?
Has your specialty become procrastination? Hesitation?
Has your specialty become FEAR?

If so, gain confidence from things like my podcast and blog and KNOW THAT YOU CAN and then simply DO IT!

The world is WAITING for you! Do you know that? Do you believe that?

There is a purpose for you - this world is waiting for YOU to fulfill YOUR purpose - yes, even your DESTINY!!!

It's time. No one else can do it for you. No one else WILL do it for you.

Only you. You are the only one that can. And you will. You MUST.

Be sure to listen in to Wednesday's discussion as we continue these thoughts.

And, as always...

"Make it an AWESOME Day! (Who else is going to do it for you?)"
