Thursday's Podcast Discussion
As I conclude my discussion of chapter 5 - "Specialized Knowledge" - I discussed the importance of YOU finding YOUR specialty!
Think about it - if all you have to offer is the same thing that thousands of other people can do - you will be limited on the amount of income that you will receive. You will also find that you are easily replaceable - hey, if everyone else can do it, perhaps they can find someone cheaper.
HOWEVER, if you can offer something that very few others - and perhaps NO OTHERS - can offer, then - guess what? YOU WILL BE GREATLY VALUED!
"Oh, but I have nothing special to offer"
"It's too much work to try to find something or to become a 'specialist'"
Another thing that was discussed was Napoleon Hill's observation that one thing for which there was NO REMEDY was a LACK OF AMBITION! Are you willing to WORK at it to improve your life? He also made the observation that those who have ambition are those that find themselves placed in the position of OPPORTUNITY.
Are you willing to spend some extra time and, yes, even money to discover something that goes along with your passion? Hey, the library is FREE but, are you willing to spend the TIME that may be necessary to learn something new or learn how to present your idea?
Many talk. Few are willing to do the work.
Stop whining - start shining! (Hey, another good one!)
Think about it. I'd love to hear any comments and/or feedback that you may have on this and all of the other topics that are being discussed in my podcasts.
Tomorrow is FUN FRIDAY and we will continue our sharing of some "unusual sayings". Monday we will begin with chapter 6 of this Napoleon Hill classic on, "Imagination".

My Thankful Thursday - 27th Wedding Anniversary!
Today - May 28, 2009 - I celebrate 27 years of marriage with my wife, Janan and for that, I am THANKFUL!
Happy Anniversary!
Wonderful Wednesday! - What's YOUR Specialty (part 2)
Good morning friends! (Hey, it's morning as I type this, o.k.?)
Yes, it is another WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY and, as always, it is within YOUR reach and YOUR power and YOUR capabilities to MAKE it so. Yes, you! So, what will you do with it - why not make it WONDERFUL?
In today's podcast I continue my discussion on chapter 5 of Napoleon Hill's classic, "Think & Grow Rich" - "Specialized Knowledge". I really focus in on one major point with this podcast when I share Mr. Hill's passage about this being a "Changed World". Remember, this was written right after the end of the Great Depression! He talked about the "changed world" that came about as a result of what our country had just endured.
IT'S THE SAME TODAY!
We live in a "changed world" - do we not? It is no longer "business as usual" and things have changed. How well do you handle change?
Some people are afraid of change - ANY change! Some people cringe at the very word (I know people like this). Yet, if you listen, you will hear many talking very excitedly about this change and the OPPORTUNITY that is available to those that will gladly embrace and act upon this change.
What about you?
Change is a part of life, is it not? We cannot run and hide from change. We cannot change the fact that change IS a fact of life. (Hey, that was pretty nifty, huh?)
So, we can either run and try to hid (it won't work, friend) OR we can accept it, study it and take advantage of the OPPORTUNITY that is available only during times of great change.
Break that down even further for yourself this morning. Let's forget about the "world climate" for a moment. Let's focus on your world. Are you going through changes? Job stress? Job loss? Relationship problems? Financial worry? Listen - whatever it is - YOU CAN AND WILL MAKE IT THROUGH! You MUST come to believe that and know that deep down inside. (This actually goes back to the chapter discussion on "autosuggestion").
Although you would rather not go through this change, it may be inevitable. And, that being the case - it is up to YOU to determine what you will do with it and how you will approach it. Yes, you. No one else. Sure, people like me can help by giving you some positive encouragement but it is even up to you as to what you allow this positive encouragement to do in your life. You can toss it aside and leave it or you can absorb it and try to apply it. So, yes, you see - it still is up to you.
Remember..."As long as their is breath, there is hope!"
You CAN do it!
And, as always....
"Make it an AWESOME Day! (Who else is going to do it for you?)"

50th Podcast: "What's YOUR Specialty?"
Today - after a long, extended weekend away - I finally get back to our discussion of Napoleon Hill's classic, "Think & Grow Rich".
We focus on chapter 5 entitled: "Specialized Knowledge" - the 4th step on your journey to "riches".
Here's the main focus on the little bit that I discuss in today's podcast --- are you gaining "specialized" knowledge OR are you "specializing" in gaining "general knowledge"?
What do I mean by that? First of all, Mr. Hill points out that there are two kinds of knowledge - general knowledge (like you gain from attending school/college) and specialized knowledge (putting your knowledge to use for a "specialized" - or specific - purpose).
Too many people are "specializing in gaining general knowledge" - they are spending all of their time gaining one degree after another but never take that step to put all of that "education" and "knowledge" to work or use for the benefit of others. Do you know anyone like that? Are YOU that type of person?
I discuss how I have known people that seem to have "hid" in college. They didn't really want to leave the comfort of college and step out into the real world. They had the routine down - learn to study, study, pass the tests and get your degree and they feared stepping out of that comfort zone.
Sound familiar? We've discussed this same type of idea in an early podcast entitled: "Why Not Now?" Plans and/or education is good - even great and absolutely necessary! However, there comes a time when we MUST step out and put those plans and that education into practice!
Has your specialty become learning and planning?
Has your specialty become procrastination? Hesitation?
Has your specialty become FEAR?
If so, gain confidence from things like my podcast and blog and KNOW THAT YOU CAN and then simply DO IT!
The world is WAITING for you! Do you know that? Do you believe that?
There is a purpose for you - this world is waiting for YOU to fulfill YOUR purpose - yes, even your DESTINY!!!
It's time. No one else can do it for you. No one else WILL do it for you.
Only you. You are the only one that can. And you will. You MUST.
Be sure to listen in to Wednesday's discussion as we continue these thoughts.
And, as always...

Concluding Thoughts on "AutoSuggestion"
Greetings, Friends! It's another WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY and I want to thank you for spending these few minutes with me!
In today's podcast I conclude my thoughts on chapter 4 out of Napoleon Hill's classic book, "Think & Grow Rich". This chapter on AUTOSUGGESTION is the 3rd step on the journey to success (you define that for yourself) and is a very exciting part of this same process.
One thing I did point out in the podcast for today was the fact that Napoleon Hill has some very specific steps (lists) in his book designed to help each of us know EXACTLY how to incorporate these principles into our plans. This chapter has such a list and I encourage you to pay close attention to this - and all - such steps/lists that he has throughout this great book.
What a powerful concept to finally get ourselves to the point where the AUTOSUGGESTION kicks in from our subconscious mind to aid us even when we are in a "down" emotional state of mind. AWESOME!!!
So read and reread, listen and listen again to the inspiring thoughts shared in this chapter - I really loved the empowerment that came from this chapter.
Please feel free to share your thoughts, ideas, opinions, insights and anything else that you have about this study - I'd love to hear from you @ mike@futureyouuniversity.com
And, as always remember -

Terrific Tuesday podcast: AUTOSUGGESTION
Now, this is not a word we use very often or hear very often (if at all) in our society today. I would guess the easiest way to "explain" it or define it would simply be our ability to FILTER OUT what goes into our subconscious mind.
Napoleon Hill suggests in this fourth chapter (the 3rd step on this journey) that we all have this ability though we don't all exercise it at all times.
Let's just look at the word, itself, and break it down for a better understanding: AUTOSUGGESTION - AUTO and SUGGESTION.
1. auto - short for automatic
2. suggestion - the art of suggesting...so, let's look at the root word, "suggest" - to mention or introduce (an idea, proposition, plan, etc.) for consideration or possible action
So, when you combine those two words what you have is this:
- to AUTOMATICALLY mention or introduce for consideration or possible action
Now then, to me - that helps clear things up a lot as I read this chapter. Mr. Hill discusses the importance of continually reminding ourselves (from the last chapter on FAITH) of our BELIEFS (faith) about things so that we begin to KNOW that they are, indeed true.
So, in other words, repeating our positive beliefs to ourselves to the point that our CONSCIOUS mind allows this access to the SUBCONSCIOUS mind and then - once it is there - it can kick in on "auto-pilot" - it becomes AUTOMATIC and we don't have to continually try to convince ourselves of it's truth and/or value.
Does this make sense? Go back to - chapter 2 it was, I believe - where a list is given of what to do EVERYDAY (2 times a day), step by step in order to achieve what it is you want to achieve. One of those steps was to repeat - out loud - these things again and again and again WITH EMOTION and FEELING and, guess what happens, you will begin to KNOW - beyond a shadow of a doubt - that, they, indeed are true!
It is really amazing how the mind works - if we will let it and if we also will acknowledge it!
We will continue this discussion in tomorrow's podcast as well.
Hey, as always, thanks for being here and being a part of FUTURE YOU UNIVERSITY!

Magical Monday! - More on FAITH (and an amazing poem)
Good day, friends!
I hope that you begin this WONDERFUL WEEK off on a high note on this MAGICAL MONDAY!
Yes, YOU hold the key to making your day just that - "magical"!
In today's podcast I conclude my discussion on "Faith" (chapter 3) from Napoleon Hill's classic, "Think & Grow Rich".
In this podcast I share a poem found in this chapter and I will go ahead and post it here. Interestingly, there are at least two people listed as the author of this poem and I even found a mention of a third. So, actually, I have no idea who the real author is, but I mentioned Walter D. Wintle as the author but have also found several that list C.W. Longenecker as the author. Regardless, here is the POWERFUL poem that I shared:
I am very passionate about this whole idea - and, when you listen to the podcast you should be able to pick up on that! We MUST stop waiting for someone or something to come into our lives that will propel us to where we want to "land". IT IS WITHIN EACH OF US - you have to develop that believe in order to move forward. Will you?
I also ended the podcast with two quotes that were listed at the end of this chapter. I'll share those with you here as well:
"There are NO LIMITATIONS to the mind except those we acknowledge."
"Both POVERTY and RICHES are the offspring of thought."
We limit ourselves when we need to BELIEVE in ourselves.
Our future (the future you) begins with the seed of thought. Nourish it. Feed it. Help it to grow and develop into the future YOU desire!
Think about it. Share it. Live it. And...

If you think you are beaten, you are,
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you like to win, but you think you can't,
It is almost certain you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost,
For out in the world we find,
Success begins with a fellow's will. It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, you are,
You've got to think high to rise,
You've got to be sure of yourself before you can ever win a prize.
Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man.
But soon or late the man who wins,Is the man who thinks he can.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow! Powerful words! And they are TRUE! As we finish this discussion on FAITH or your BELIEF - remember that "What you believe will greatly determine what you achieve!" (my own quote).

Fun Friday - Arkansas Jokes
Yeah, I'm FROM Arkansas so I can do these jokes!
Let's all laugh and have fun (as a matter of fact, chances are you have ALREADY listened to the podcast by this time since it's 6:30 Friday evening my time as I type this) on this FUN FRIDAY and carry it on all the way through the weekend.
I just got back from a very enjoyable 200 mile ride on my motorcycle today. For me, there is nothing more enjoyable than getting out on the open road on my bike. Had several chores to take care of in different towns and the weather was perfect for taking my bike.
So, due to that, this is getting posted a lot later than I had planned!
Anyway - make it an AWESOME Day! (Who else is going to do it for you?)

Inspirational Story of 11 yr. old Girl Raising Money for an Orphange in Africa
This is an amazing story of an 11 yr. old girl from Conway, Arkansas raising money for an African orphanage with her lemonade stand!
She started off with the goal of feeding a village for a week. She has surpassed that and has now even raised enough money to buy 5 acres of land for the orphanage!
Wow - are you challenged? Are you inspired?
Never again should the words, "I can't do anything, I'm just one person!" come from our lips!
This is a MUST READ / MUST SEE story!
Check it out:

More on FAITH or BELIEF
It's another THANKFUL THURSDAY!
I hope that as you listen to my podcasts for this week (starting back on Magical Monday) that you will pick up the fact that it is vitally important for each of us to take control of our feelings, emotions, thoughts. When I ask, "What do YOU have to be thankful for?" I want to help you realize that, yes, friends, etc. CAN be a part of the things for which we are thankful. However, IF we rely on people, places and/or things to give us things for which to be thankful - we will be disappointed again and again and again.
Might I make a suggestion?
Since you are reading this, I can say this with complete confidence - You can be thankful for the fact that you are taking the time to fill your mind/heart/soul with POSITIVE influences!
This is a KEY point that must be realized and it is also a key point that Napoleon Hill makes in the 3rd chapter of his book, "Think & Grow Rich".
I focus the majority of today's podcast on his discussion of how important it is to saturate our minds with POSITIVE influences and to rid our lives of the NEGATIVE influences.
We must repeat again and again the positive thoughts that we know to be true. The mind will come to believe something to be true if repeated enough - regardless of whether it is actually true or not!
So, indeed, it is VERY important to repeat to ourselves those things that will lift us up and not tear us down.
Enjoy the podcast - it's a good one!
And, as always....

FAITH
Hey, celebrate "WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY" but making a list of all of the things/people/places that help make it wonderful for you.
HOWEVER, also make a list of how/why YOU have made it wonderful by your attitude - even if all of the things/people/places on the other list did not exist!
In today's podcast, we move on to chapter 3 in Napoleon Hill's classic, "Think & Grow Rich". This is the 2nd "step" in this process and this chapter is on "FAITH".
I can't remember who said it originally and exactly how they said it, but you have likely heard it said that whether you think you can or can't - you are right!
As I was recording my podcast last night on this chapter I came up with this phrase and thought it was pretty good (if I do say so myself!).
"What you believe will greatly determine what you achieve!"
Which will it be for you? Which belief system will YOU CHOOSE for your life today?
"Oh, I could never accomplish that!" You're right!
"Yes, I WILL accomplish that!" You're right, again!
The Bible defines "faith" as "...the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen."
Think about that and apply it to our discussion. Our future is unknown! We may have our plans and our goals and dreams - but we cannot see into the future. That being said, it is a RISK that we take when we make an attempt to "mold" our future according to our goals and dreams. Many times the old "what ifs" creep in and we abandon our journey out of fear of the unknown.
FAITH, however, helps us to understand that, by it's very definition - there is SUBSTANCE as well as HOPE!
This SUBSTANCE comes from our planning and our burning desire and the EVIDENCE comes from the proof of others that have walked this trail before us and can show us - with PROOF/EVIDENCE that indeed, it is possible for us to do the same!
Just as with anything else (and this idea is also discussed in the beginning of this chapter and on the podcast), the longer we allow ourselves to exposed to something, the more likely it will be for us to adopt and adapt. The example used in the book is one that lives a life of crime. The first time they are exposed to crime they abhor it! Then, over time, they become less offended and more accepting of it until they, themselves, become a participant.
So it is with increasing our faith and our belief in our abilities! That's why it is so important to listen to these podcasts, read these articles as well as other books, etc. that are FILLED WITH POSITIVE THOUGHTS --- so that we, too, may begin to adopt these ideas as our own and adapt to this new way of thinking.
YES YOU CAN! Why not you? Why not now?
Think about it - I'd love to hear your thoughts as well.
And, as always....

Starting Point - DESIRE (part 3)
Hey friends!
It's another TERRIFIC TUESDAY and I really got off for a few minutes on this point on today's podcast. Hey, if you haven't listened yet - be sure and do so ( http://tinyurl.com/d4n2fx ) .....I really got FIRED UP on this one and, as you can see in the last post that I put up right after I recorded it last night, I referred to it as HIGH OCTANE!!!
How can you NOT get pumped and excited when reading and discussing this great book, "Think & Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill?
I don't have it in front of me as I type up this article at my office, so I won't attempt to share the specific quotes with you - HOWEVER, the point is made that this book was written right after the Great Depression and Mr. Hill emphasizes over and again the fact that OPPORTUNITY was ABUNDANT!
Does this message apply today? ABSOLUTELY! We have too many negative people in our world proclaiming that there is NO opportunity to be had. However, it's like this little thing I saw once before.....how do you read the following:
OPPORTUNITYISNOWHERE
You can read it one of two ways:
1. Opportunity is nowhere - this is how the majority of people read this. That's a fact. I believe it is due to the fact that most people actually believe this to be true.
OR
2. Opportunity is now here - the exact same letters are used to form this thought. Can you see it? Can you believe it? Can you act upon it?
We MUST NOT accept defeat as a reality! I shared a quote about this on today's podcast. As a matter of fact, it's the same quote that my son, Jordan, picked out to put on the front of the t-shirt he designed. You can see this at: www.PrepareTheFutureYou.com and you can actually purchase one of these. At this point - just let me know how to do so.
Anyway - listen to the podcast today and allow yourself to develop that STRONG, BURNING DESIRE that will see you through the ups AND downs along the way!
And, as always...

Success Needs No Apologies! - "Magical Monday"
I hope that you are enjoying our discussions from the book, "Think & Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill in our current podcasts. I know I am enjoying sharing this information with you and am getting "more comfortable" with the amount of material to share in such a limited time on these podcasts.
That being the case, today's podcast is the 2nd part of the discussion on Chapter 2 - DESIRE.
As Mr. Hill continues his emphasis on DESIRE being the starting point of all achievement he also emphasizes that fact that we must have a DEFINITENESS OF PURPOSE - the knowledge of what one wants and the burning DESIRE to possess it.
We may choose to call that "FOCUS". Whatever you choose to call it and whether or not your "goal" is to be wealthy (rich) - WHATEVER YOUR GOAL, you MUST have that burning desire within that will drive you through any and all perceived failures along the way. We have already discussed that in some of our recent discussions on this topic.
However, as I look at this statement - I also see the importance of knowing your "WHY". Your PURPOSE - WHY are you pursuing this goal/dream? Is it simply to amass wealth? I'm thinking, since you are reading this, that the answer to that would be "no". Is it for your family and their financial security? Do you have something (a group, organization, charity) in mind with which you plan to share? Do you have something in mind that you want to do that requires more money than you have right now? WHAT IS THE "WHY" BEHIND YOUR DESIRE?
Another of the quotes in this chapter that I brought out was the following:
"Success requires NO APOLOGIES, failure permits NO ALIBIS."
WOW! Think about that! Perhaps we do not pursue "success" because we often feel that we need to apologize for doing so! Again, go back to the discussion last week on the thought of, "Is it wrong to desire wealth?" Should we feel GUILTY or APOLOGIZE because we seek success or achieve success?
NO!
If it were not for successful people - those that had a BURNING DESIRE to achieve success - we would not have many of the things that make our lives not only convenient but also healthier, safer, etc. Thomas Edison never gave up! He pushed forward again and again after many perceived "failures" while creating the "light bulb" as we know it today. His thought on this - each "failure" was just one step closer to "success". Why? He said that it was just another answer to "what doesn't work"! Wow! What an attitude. Aren't you glad he succeeded?
FAILURE PERMITS NO ALIBIS - stop making excuses! We are good at that, are we not? Do not accept anything less than your best and stop listening to even others that want to make excuses for you! Now, this is a fine line that we walk - on one hand we shouldn't "beat ourselves up" when we fall short of a goal. However, IF this goal is something that we have a BURNING DESIRE to achieve and it has a PURPOSE then we must also not allow the "comforting words" allow us to get TOO comfortable and relax and settle for mediocrity.
See what I mean?
And, finally, the last quote I wanted to discuss was one that should make a HUGE impact on our thought process as we have discussed it so far in our discussion.
"Every failure brings with it the seed of an equivalent success."
What a GREAT way to look at these perceived "failures". Will we allow ourselves to LEARN from these setbacks? This is exactly what Thomas Edison did! He allowed each failure to bring him one step closer to success - it is within each of us to do the same!
Stop counting your failures and allowing that to stop you from moving forward! Instead, look at all of the seed that has been planted and let that propel you with forward momentum. My goodness, with that in mind, I have seeds planted for a BOUNTIFUL CROP OF SUCCESS! What about you?
What great information - I am so glad that Napoleon Hill did not give up on his pursuit of this book, aren't you?
We will continue our discussion on chapter 2 in tomorrow's podcast. Until then...

Another "Anniversary"
Hey, I realize when I say this I am reminded of "newlyweds" that celebrate an anniversary with each passing month - BUT....
As of this past Saturday, May 2nd, I have been doing my podcasts for 2 months now! In that time some remarkable things have happened all thanks to YOU!
For one, during this time I have cracked the "top 100" on iTunes in the category for my podcasts and have hit #36 on at least 2 occasions that I am aware of.
THANK YOU!
And, you know what? THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING!

"Is it WRONG to Desire Wealth?" - THANKFUL THURSDAY
Greetings, friends!
What are YOU thankful for today? Well, besides the fact that the sun is out again today I am so thankful for YOU - the many friends that I have made through this process. Several of you I have talked to in one way or another. Most of you I have not - except through the podcast or through this blog - but, nevertheless, I am THANKFUL FOR YOU!
In today's podcast I break away from the actual book ("Think & Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill) in order to discuss a basic topic that needs to be considered as we discuss this classic.
Just the idea of "growing rich" gives some people a strange and uncomfortable feeling. Why? Well, I obviously cannot answer that question for everyone BUT I do know of two "reasons" with which many struggle and it is those two that I discuss in the podcast for today.
"Is it WRONG to Desire Wealth?"
First of all, again, you can use anything you want in this journey. It does not have to be money - whatever your goal is. You can apply it here.
HOWEVER, many - if not all - of our goals DO involve money and, perhaps (likely?) more money than we have at this moment. So, why the struggle?
1. Religious Teaching/Thought - A verse in the Bible that has been misquoted so many times is found in 1 Timothy 6:10. What we often here is, "MONEY is the root of all evil." Please note, that is NOT what this verse says! The actual quote from this verse says the following, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil..." There is a big difference there, my friend. The thought behind this is the danger of allowing the LOVE OF MONEY to become so great that money - and the pursuit/love of money - becomes your MASTER! Bob Proctor (http://www.bobproctor.com) puts it this way - "Money makes either a TERRIBLE MASTER or a WONDERFUL SERVANT." This may not be an EXACT quote, but it's pretty close! Bottom line - whatever "good work" that you are able to do now can be multiplied many times over with greater financial resources. What are doing now? Think about how wonderful it will be to be able to multiply those efforts many times over!
2. Societal Teaching/Thought - We also struggle with the idea of feeling GUILTY if we desire wealth. Look around you. So many people are struggling and suffering. There are so many needs in the world. And I desire wealth? Shame on me! And, there are plenty of people readily available to shake their fingers as well! However, just like in point #1 - we can actually DO more good in this area IF we allow money to be our SERVANT and not allow it to become our MASTER! Have you seen the commercial on television where the guy talks about his company GIVES AWAY one pair of shoes for every pair they sell? That blows me away! Think about it though - what allows them to do such a thing? Honestly, they have to be able to "afford" to do such a thing or that company would sink. And, if that company were to sink and fail then many children that are currently benefiting from this "free shoe" outreach would go without.
See what I mean?
Who are you now? Wealth will only AMPLIFY and MAGNIFY who you are at this moment. If you are a greedy person - money will not magically transform you into a generous person. It just won't happen. If you are not already reaching out to those that have need - you will not do so just because you have money. HOWEVER, if you ARE a generous and caring person now - you will have the opportunity to MULTIPLY your efforts beyond your wildest dreams!
So, honestly - as for me - I DESIRE wealth so that I may MAGNIFY my plans and my efforts even now.
May I share one of my "dreams" in this area? One thing I plan to do when I start my seminars is to donate 10% of the money taken in for each seminar admission ticket. No, not AFTER all of the expenses - but right off of the top. So, for example - if the seminar brings in $10,000 in admission, then I want to donate $1,000. My goal? On a regular basis I want to be able to donate $5,000 just from the ticket sales to my seminars and, I'd love to donate this to the "Make a Wish Foundation". That $5,000 is actually what it takes - on average - to fulfill one dream for one of these special young people.
Thank you for allowing me to share that with you!
So...if you struggle with those thoughts and ideas I'd love to hear from you and, perhaps help you move on past that struggle if possible.
As always, I encourage you to send any feedback - good or bad - considering the podcast and/or my blog information.
So....as always...
"Make it an AWESOME Day! (Who else is going to do it for you?)"

"Starting Point: DESIRE" (Wonderful Wednesday!)
Greetings, friends! I hope that you are having a WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY indeed and that today will be a wonderful day because you used the ability that you have within you to make it so!
In today's podcast I begin the discussion of chapter 2, which is the first point that Napoleon Hill gives in his book, "Think & Grow Rich", as "the starting point of all achievement". And, that point is DESIRE.
We already talked about the idea of translating DESIRE into REALITY - the need for ACTION for that to take place. An idea (or desire) is just an idea/desire UNTIL we put ACTION behind it to move it "down the road" toward it's completion or reality.
In this chapter, Mr. Hill discusses the importance of the "intensity" of this DESIRE. Again, we can put a "value" on our dreams (which can also be interchanged with the word, "desire") by how quickly we may give up on pursing those dreams and/or desires.
So many times we look at those that have achieved great things and think something along the lines of, "Wow, they must have caught a lucky break somewhere along the way" not realizing that their DESIRE was a deep, BURNING DESIRE that drove them past and through any perceived failures or set backs.
Here is a quote I used from this chapter in the story of the leader of a particular army that told his troops to burn their ships in which they had arrived on foreign soil to do battle. Why? If their way of retreat was gone, they would be forced to stay and fight. They did and they won. Here's the quote:
"Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to burn his ships and cut all sources of retreat."
One thing great about this book is that you will find very specific LISTS of things to do in order to follow the "plan" that Mr. Hill puts before us. One such list that I discussed in today's podcast was the list of SIX SPECIFIC THINGS one may do in order to translate that DESIRE into it's financial success. Again, you can put whatever "goal" or "dream" into this equation that you wish - it does not have to be money and/or riches. But remember, the title of this book is, "Think and Grow Rich". "Rich" can mean many different things to many different people.
(A little side note here - in Thursday's podcast I'm going to make a little detour and talk briefly about the struggle that many have with this whole idea of "rich" and the pursuit of riches. Is it wrong? Should we desire such? So be sure and join me for that discussion on THANKFUL THURSDAY!)
1. Fix in your mind the EXACT amount of money you desire.
Again, this can be ANY dream or goal that you have. The idea behind this is - BE SPECIFIC. Does this sound familiar? If you have read ANYONE that talked about the importance of goals, you hear this talked about. THIS is where they got it from. Napoleon Hill - to some extent is the "godfather" of personal development and many that teach these things have gotten their ideas from this man.
2. Determine EXACTLY what you intend to give in return for the money you desire.
He adds to that, "There is no such reality as 'something for nothing'. " In other words - what do you plan to DO in order to reach/achieve your dream and/or goal? Again, you must get specific!
3. Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.
Is this not also something we have become familiar with in this area of thinking? Set a date. Make sure it is far enough out to give you time to put these things into practice BUT don't set it so far out that it becomes a "forgotten dream".
4. Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin AT ONCE, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into ACTION.
Be specific with your DESIRE, be specific with WHAT you intend to do in order to achieve that desire, be specific as to WHEN you plan to achieve that desire and then create a plan on HOW you plan to get there. I love the significance of what is said here - "...begin at once, whether you are ready or not..." Do you remember the discussions we had on "Making Your Move"? In those I emphasized the importance of not waiting and waiting and waiting. This was also emphasized in the points we covered in the FREE REPORT available at my website (http://www.FutureYouUniversity.com) in the podcasts from a little over a week ago. Don't wait until everything is lined up perfectly - if you do, you will NEVER begin! Again, ACTION is the key here and this is something that too many people misquote about Napoleon Hill. Those that, in my opinion very obviously have not read what Mr. Hill has written will claim that he does not call his readers into action. This is but one place where it is obvious that he does, indeed, call us to ACTION!
5. Put it all together.
Now, I paraphrased this point. What Mr. Hill says in the book is a listing of points 1 - 4. In other words - don't do these things separately - PUT THEM TOGETHER AND ACT UPON THEM!
6. Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning.
He also adds, "As you read - see and feel and believe yourself already in possession of the money." We call that "visualization" don't we? Don't just read it - see it and believe it!
Wow, again, can you see how our modern day positive thinkers and promoters of personal development have used materials such as these from the past in their teachings? Why? Because they, too, (like Mr. Hill) have put them to the test and have found that they do, indeed, work!
So, again, apply ANY goal, desire and/or idea to this formula. But the key here is - DO IT!
I can almost "hear" some of you as you have listened to the podcast and as you have read this say something like, "Well, it's not all about getting rich!". You're right - it's not. And, if you stick with me on this and read along for yourself, you will see that Mr. Hill also points this out in his writings.
And, join me tomorrow as we do take a little detour from the book to discuss this very idea about riches.
As always, I'd love to hear any input you have about these ideas. Please either leave a comment here under this article or feel free to e-mail me at anytime at: mike@futureyouuniversity.com

"Translating DESIRE into REALITY" (part 2) - TERRIFIC TUESDAY!!
One thing I can tell already as I begin these discussions from Napoleon Hill's classic, "Think & Grow Rich" is that I am going to have to pinpoint fewer points that I want to cover with each podcast! THERE IS JUST SO MUCH GOOD STUFF in this book that it makes it hard to do.
I know there's no hurry - but, at the same time, I'd like to TRY to keep it to two episodes per chapter...but I'm not sure that will be possible.
I apologize if it "sounds" like I was a little "hectic" on the first two episodes covering the first chapter. I think I am still trying to determine the "main focus points" I want to cover in each chapter. I appreciate your patience and welcome any and all insight YOU have as YOU read (or have read) this outstanding book.
The main point I want to go a little deeper with here than on the podcast is the idea of:
SUCCESS Consciousness vs. FAILURE Consciousness
Mr. Hill points out how important our MIND is in this whole process of "thinking (get the point?) and growing rich" - and "rich" can be whatever you want your definition to be! Successful in whatever way defines success for you.
This is also stressed in my "tag line" for Future You University..."Where we believe that your greatest education takes place on the campus of your mind." Simply put - as has been said before - whether you think you CAN or CAN'T - you're right!
Many of us live with a FAILURE CONSCIOUSNESS - we have suffered "failure" and, that being the case, have given up vowing to never ever try to "stick our necks out" again. Never. Yet, as is pointed out in this first chapter with the Mr. Darby that stopped three feet from a fortune in gold - it is possible to allow those "failures" to teach us important lessons - namely, DO NOT QUIT just because of a perceived "failure"!
Someway, somehow we MUST learn to switch that FAILURE consciousness over to a SUCCESS CONSCIOUSNESS. One way - in my opinion - is to realize that failure IS a part of success! It's true! All you have to do is do a little research on ANY successful person and take a look at their life and you will see "failures" in their life. The difference is - THEY KEPT GOING and DID NOT GIVE UP!
That, in a nutshell is the SUCCESS consciousness that we must all develop. One of the first 3 or 4 podcasts I did was entitled, "What Are Your Dreams Worth?" which focused on this very idea: how far will you go, how long will you go in the pursuit of your dream? If it's not "worth" much - you'll quit at the first sign of defeat or difficulty. You can SAY it's worth this or that - but you will prove by your ability - or inability - to stick to the pursuit of this dream how valuable this dream truly is.
Well, that's enough for now - share your thoughts with me here or via my email at: mike@futureyouuniversity.com
I'd love to hear from you and, always remember -

Marvin Miles interviews Mike Spillman
Hey friends! I wanted to tell you about an interview that I participated in last week and is now posted on the following website:
http://www.ExtraordinarySpeakersNetwork.com
I really enjoyed the time I spent with Marvin Miles answering questions about how public speaking has been a powerful tool that I have been able to use in my life. I also share how important the ability to communicate effectively is a tool that each and every one of us needs in our every day lives.
The interview lasts about 40 minutes, but I'd love to have you listen in - this is just another way to learn a little more about me and what I'm all about.
Thanks again, Marvin!

Turning DESIRE Into REALITY (part 1)
Today's podcast begins a discussion on Napoleon Hill's classic book: "Think and Grow Rich". Again, you can get a free copy by going to the link over in the right hand column of this blog.
I basically cover some information in the preface and the first part of chapter 1. Here's one of the main things I talk about as far as Napoleon Hill himself - this book was the effort of 20 years! Do you get that? 20 years!! Over that time period he spent time interviewing over 47 people (I'm not sure of the exact number, but he lists 47 in the book and says there were more) and also applying and testing their principles shared. He discovered that all of them shared some of the same traits and ideas shared! When you look at the list you discover great men of business (Henry Ford, Thomas Edison for example) as well as President's of the United States of America. Twenty years of discussion, thought, testing, questioning and applying these principles -- all with the intent of sharing this information through a book.
That fact alone tells me that this was a great man! To be this disciplined on a task. To be this focused on continuing this all the way to it's completion. To be this dedicated to learning and sharing these principles. Wow!
I share the very beginnings of a story that Mr. Hill tells in the first chapter - and will tell more of the story in tomorrow's podcast - about a man that stopped three feet short of a fortune in gold. THREE FEET SHORT!
What about us? How dedicated are we to turning a DESIRE (or idea) into REALITY? How committed are we to "seeing it through" without giving up and quitting at the first sign of difficulty? Are we willing to do what it takes and stick it out? Are we willing to keep going in the midst of possible perceived failure?
Please feel free to join in this discussion here or by sending me an email at: mike@futureyouuniversity.com
I'd love to hear your input on these important topics!
And, as always....
