A "Plan B" IS Necessary - My Personal Story

 In the last blog article I discussed the question, "Do you NEED a 'Plan B'?" Again, "Plan B" referring to having a "back up" plan or source of income in case your "Plan A" (main plan or source of income) falls through.

You will have to decide that for yourself but, in my opinion, the answer is a great big "YES!".

In this article as well as in the podcast I've done on this topic (see links below) I will discuss my personal, most recent, story about my last "job" and how that situation has, once again, emphasized to me and for me the ABSOLUTE NECESSITY to have a "Plan B" in place and, more than likely, even a "Plan C, D, E, F and G" , if not more.

 

Some of the time frame on this may not be completely correct but, I'll do my best to be as accurate as possible. The main focus of sharing this with you is to help you understand what could happen to you - IF it hasn't happened to you already.  

Back in November of 2021 I answered an ad that I had come across for a job that, to be honest, seemed too good to be true. It was for a job to where I only worked two days a week and had the ability to make $100,000 + my very first year. It was for the position of being a sales consultant (official title was "Clinic Consultant") to close on a $5,000 product offering. 

I applied but, to be honest, I didn't expect much and definitely didn't expect it to actually be a legitimate job opportunity. However, I DID start noticing commercials on my local television channels for this particular company and for the office from which I would be working. That increased my "faith" that this may, indeed, be an incredible opportunity.

Long story short, I was interviewed by a couple of managers, hired and went to a 4 day training at which I caught COVID which delayed my start by about a week. 

I finally started my work the first week in January of 2022 and, after a nervous and slow start for the first couple of weeks, I began to "hit my stride" and began to have some INCREDIBLE results for the two days that I was working for the week. WOW! I was excited and thankful for such an opportunity.

I had already told my wife that I KNEW that I needed to get a "Plan B" in place because this was a job that relied on me being physically present to do the job and it was all commission. In other words, if I didn't work, I didn't make money or even have the opportunity to make money.

In March I noticed that things began to change. Instead of "screening" being done in such a way that the majority of the people I met with being able to actually pay for the product, I was seeing more and more people that were on fixed incomes that had no way to be able to do so.  This greatly was impacting my commission checks and, from what I could tell, it was affecting everyone in the company that held the same position that I did in different offices. 

Even though my commissions took a big hit - probably cut in about half - I was still able to maintain a reasonable amount of income with promises of "it would get better". I was beginning to feel uncomfortable due to the "rah rah" talk that I was hearing that would be similar to someone on a sinking ship stating that "all is well". 

Fast forward to the end of April and everyone in the company that held the same position had their "days to work" cut in half. In other words, I went from 2 days a week (8 days a month) to 2 days every 2 weeks (4 days a month). Again, "Oh, it's going to get better!"

For various reasons, my clientele dropped by about 80% and my commission dropped by about 90%. I knew this was a sinking ship and it was confirmed when, on one of my "off" days, I dropped by the office and found someone there that was about to go to training to take my spot.

I had never had any problems, never been "written up" and had produced well. My managers were not even aware of this move and I discovered that this was happening to others as well.

So, I was out just like that with no "Plan B" in place.

None.

So now I've been scrambling to try to get something going that would enable me to make some good income and also allow me to still work on developing a "Plan B, C, D, E" and so on.

You tell me...after reading that story, would you agree that it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to get a "Plan B" in place?

COVID-19 should have made that very clear to EVERYONE. If you don't know what I'm talking about due to when you read this article, do a little research but, businesses were shut down and not allowed to operate, people were sent home with no way to make an income and MANY of these businesses went OUT of business after being in business for decades.

What if you get sick or hurt and you can't work? What if your spouse or a parent or a child becomes ill or injured to the point that they need YOUR care and attention that would prevent you from working a "regular" 9 to 5 job?

I will continue this discussion in the next article but, until then, ask yourself this question: "How much CONTROL do I actually have over my current situation/job?"

How To Get "Good Luck"

I guess I've heard it for most of my life. People that look at others that are more successful than they and the less-successful person states that the other has acquired their success by luck.

Many times, the less-successful use this as a way to try to make themselves feel better ABOUT themselves for their lack of success. So, it is easier to try to "tear down" someone else's success than it is for them to actually do the work necessary to achieve similar success.

Thomas Edison said, "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."

Some time ago I did an episode on the idea that OPPORTUNITY does not always knock and that, at times, you must go out and find it. At times it will definitely involve WORK along the way.

Here's a quick bit of advice on this thought: Seek success in the area of something that you enjoy  - something that "cries out" YOU and that "work" will not seem like work at all.

And, as you do so, always be sure to...

Mike's Quotes #23: Destiny On Purpose

It seems that a lot of people have the same idea about "destiny" as they do about "opportunity". It's as if they think that "destiny" is going to show up on their front porch, right alongside "opportunity" and, although you're just kicking back in your easy chair doing nothing, they will knock and wait gleefully for you to answer the door.

WRONG!

I guess a lot of people get this idea from the very definition of the word, "destiny".  All of the definitions I looked over all had the word "predetermined" found in the definition which I believe is very misleading. The very idea of something that is "predetermined" suggests that, regardless of what you do or don't do, it's going to happen anyway.

Once again, WRONG! 

 Do you REALLY believe that you can just sit on your couch and never pursue anything and reach any "destiny" other than that of becoming obese and one that has accomplished absolutely nothing? Oh, believe me, I hear someone saying, "But maybe that's my destiny!"

Seriously, I can't help you if that is the way that you think!

Here is what is "predetermined" in and for your life: "As long as there is breath, there is hope!"

That's right. The fact that YOU have OPPORTUNITY available to you each and every day is what is "predetermined" in and for your life. Period. Regardless of who you are or where you live. Period.

Again, you cannot wait for opportunity to "knock" on your door but, rather, you must "go after" opportunity and "chase it down".

"A powerful, positive and great DESTINY is something that is done on PURPOSE!"

Daily, purposeful activity will help you achieve a powerful and positive destiny. Yeah, in other words, you will have to WORK or "make effort" to bring that desire of destiny to reality.

In my next article I will discuss the idea of those that expect something DIFFERENT to happen in their life while they fail and/or refuse to make any CHANGES in their life.

It's just not going to happen.

If you want a POWERFUL and POSITIVE destiny then, friend, you need to take some PURPOSEFUL action in and for your life and you need to do that TODAY.

Mike's Quotes #17: Opportunity Knocks?

"Did you know that OPPORTUNITY doesn't always 'knock'?" - Mike Spillman (3.6.11)

I'm sure we've all heard the different discussions about how we must all be ready when opportunity "knocks". Though it is true, I still have a question about that - How do you know when opportunity "knocks"?

Here are a few things I have noticed about opportunity by observation...

   1. OPPORTUNITY IS TRICKY! Sometimes, "opportunity" will send a lot of "pretty stuff" before it comes your way. What am I talking about? Go back and read my last article that talks about, "PRETTY stuff doesn't always mean GOOD stuff!" Sometimes "opportunity" will sit back and watch how you handle the distractions before it decides to reveal itself to you!

   2. OPPORTUNITY MAY DISGUISE ITSELF! Thomas Edison is quoted as saying, "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."  

    3. OPPORTUNITY MAY NOT KNOCK! You see, too many people sit around and wait for opportunity to walk up to THEIR door, KNOCK on their door and then WAIT for them to answer the door. To be blunt, what makes YOU so special as to think that opportunity is going to go to that much effort or that opportunity is going to actually choose to knock on YOUR door as opposed to your neighbor's door?

   4. OPPORTUNITY MAY HAVE TO BE "HUNTED DOWN" AND "CAPTURED"! Hey, it's the truth! Sometimes you have to go out there, hunt opportunity down and wrestle that sucker to the ground and capture and claim it for your own! If you pay attention you will find "clues" as to where this opportunity may be found but, again, you must pay attention! You can't always - if ever - sit back and wait for it to knock on your door. If you want it bad enough then you must be willing to take ACTION and go after opportunity!

Are you WAITING or are you PURSUING opportunity?

You can continue to wait if you choose but, remember, "Opportunity doesn't always KNOCK!"

You Be YOU! (Everyone Else is Taken)

There is no one else like you. Period. There never HAS been anyone like you and there never WILL BE anyone like you. Ever. 

Wow! Let that sink in for a moment. 

You are, indeed, one-of-a-kind and, yes, you are UNIQUE!

That being said - and is a FACT - why compare yourself to anyone else or why try to be LIKE someone else?

I understand having a mentor or a "hero" that you want to emulate or "be like", but don't try to be a "carbon copy" of that person. You simply cannot! We'll talk more about this in the next topic but, don't even try to COMPARE yourself to anyone else - there is no need!

Your finger prints identify YOU and no one else! Again, with that being true, don't you think (as well as believe and understand) that your MIND also is unique and that no one actually thinks about things and approaches things exactly the way that you do? They don't - they CAN'T!

So, take your unique talents and abilities, find your passion and your purpose as we discussed in the last article, and you go out and make a positive and powerful impact on your world

Only YOU can do that the way that YOU can do that!

Listen CAREFULLY! Opportunity IS Available!

Have you ever been driving and then "wake up" (though you never fell asleep) and realized that you had covered a lot more miles than you thought? 

Have you ever read something - over time - ten, twenty or even thirty times and, on the thirty-first read you discover something in the exact same words and sentences that you never noticed before?

In the same way, I noticed recently that I had listened to a commercial on television several times before I "noticed" or "heard" something for the first time...even though I had actually heard it several times before. Do you understand what I mean?

One day, while watching this commercial, a certain phrase "jumped out" at me almost as if the volume had been turned up on that one phrase so that I would notice. 

The commercial is for an on-line University and it features someone (President of this University? Professor at this University?) talking to what appears to be a graduating class. Among several things that this person says here is what finally got my attention:  "The world in which we live equally distributes talent but it doesn't equally distribute opportunity, and paths are not always the same."

Take a good look at that quote and see if you actually agree with what is being said.

For me, it's a resounding "NO!"

In my opinion, the only part of that statement that has any truth in it is the very last part: "...and paths are not always the same." 

Think on this: Do you really believe that TALENT is distributed equally?  No matter how hard you want to believe that to be true and no matter how often a parent may try to convince their children that this is true, IT IS NOT TRUE!

 TALENT is NOT distributed equally! This is pure common sense to know this and to see this everywhere you look. It is a FACT that some people are more talented than others! 

Think on this: If talent was equally distributed then every person that ever tried out for a sports team would end up as a professional athlete! Every person that THOUGHT they could sing would actually be able to become a professional singer as they also won every singing competition that ever existed!

How would you decide the winner in ANY competition if talent were equally distributed in our world? 

You could not and that statement is an absolute fallacy. 

As is the phrase that follows: "...but it doesn't equally distribute opportunity.."

Honestly, what a HORRIBLE and even DAMAGING message to say to anyone!

Think on this:  OPPORTUNITY IS distributed equally in our world. Oh, there may be draw backs and road blocks. It may be hidden behind those drawbacks and road blocks but, friend, OPPORTUNITY is equally available to EVERY one and ANY one!

How hopeless the message that is shared that says that opportunity is NOT available to you, regardless of who you are or what circumstances in which you find yourself. 

Listen to me, friend and HEAR THE TRUTH! Though you may not be as talented as others you can still hold your head up with the knowledge and understanding that, indeed, OPPORTUNITY is equally available to you!

What do you read in that graphic? "Opportunity Is Nowhere" or "Opportunity Is Now Here"?

Do NOT listen to anyone that would tell you that opportunity is nowhere to be found. RID YOURSELF of that type of thinking and, honestly, those that would promote such. Because friend, the fact is that OPPORTUNITY IS NOW HERE each and every day!

That fact being true (and it is!) allows you to do the following...

CHANGE Happens!

I have already posted the Vlog and podcast that I did for this topic earlier this week and I'm just now getting to this blog article. So, that being said, you need to BE SURE to listen/watch one or the other. WHY? Because I don't have a script that I follow and there will be different/additional thoughts and ideas shared in the podcast and Vlog than there will be with this article. (Check out the links at the end of the article).

I'm not sure how much I've shared via my blog articles about the changes that have taken place in my life since the start of this year (2018). I did not label them as "New Year's Resolutions" but, rather, just a "redefining of my direction" and my future. 

Just a quick review: I have been in the insurance business off and on for several years now and joined up with an agency shortly after the start of the year that I believe will be the best connection that I could have possibly made in this industry. Along with that, I have also made positive plans to be a part of the John Maxwell Team by the end of 2018. 

This insurance business is the "vehicle" that I have chosen as my way of getting from where I started the year to where I want to be at the end of the year. (Go back and read the articles about "What Do YOU Want" and the "Journey" series for more information).

This past Monday morning I found out that the person that was my "manager" and was also the one that hired me into this particular "branch" of this agency had quit. Boom! Immediate and with no warning. WOW!

A few years ago that would have thrown me for a loop and caused me to stress out about what was going to happen next! And, I'm sure it probably has done that to some people in this group. 

Why do I say that? Because CHANGE is something that makes us very uneasy and it is also something that, many times, we do not know how to handle.

Look at that graphic at the top of the article again. If you have lived for very long then you know that what is said there is absolutely true! One of the few constant things in life is CHANGE!

Everybody and every thing changes every single day. (Listen to the podcast or watch the Vlog for a more in depth discussion of that thought).

What do YOU do when CHANGE comes your way? And friend, if you say that it hasn't - it WILL.

This next statement is also a FACT - "With change comes opportunity." And, many times (if you are determined to approach it with a positive attitude) that opportunity can be a BETTER opportunity.

That is the case with the change that has taken place this week with my insurance business. It has now ended up to where the person that is now my "manager" is, to be honest, a better equipped person to do so. He already has infused "new blood" into this whole thing which will provide me with even more opportunities to be successful. 

Again friend, CHANGE WILL COME. Prepare your mindset in a way that will keep you from "freaking out" or crumbling under the pressure that COULD come with that change. Preparation is the key to this situation as it is with most every situation that you face each and every day.

Top 10 Tips to Avoid Being Scammed

 Here is a list of the "Top 10 Tips to Avoid Getting Scammed" that I have put together from my past experience. They are not in any particular order but they are ALL very important to keep in mind.

 

1. Don't "risk" more than you can afford to lose (even if it's "guaranteed refund"). If the "getting started" cost is $100 or if it's $25, if you can't afford to lose that, DON'T DO IT!

 

2. Don't believe the hype..."too good to be true" is not always false, but it SHOULD be a warning sign! Even the legitimate opportunities do tend to "over-promote" how "easy" it is to achieve success.

 

3. Realize that those that do well, quickly, likely have a HUGE list already in place in order to have people to market to. It takes a long time to build up such a list so, don't necessarily expect immediate results . It CAN happen, but don't get crushed if it doesn't. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

 

4. DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOB until you have matched or exceeded your current income for SEVERAL months CONSISTENTLY! (1 month is NOT consistently....think more along the line of 6 months or more)

 

5. DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOB because it also puts way too much pressure on your to "make it happen". The more pressure you put on yourself (and that "opportunity") the less likely you are to succeed.

6. If you don't have the $$ to invest in advertising then understand that you CAN get people to work with you (or be your customers) with "free methods" but it will take more "sweat equity" and more time.

 

7. Do NOT use your "real" phone number (but also do not make up or use someone else's #)
           a. if you don't have an alternative, use a "time/temp" number
           b. use Google Voice by getting a "gmail account" - USE THIS!

 

8. Consider having more than one "opportunity" set up and running in order to increase your "streams of income"...
     - don't "bite off more than you can chew" but there should be some that you can do without a LOT of physical work/time on your end

 

9. Decide for yourself! You cannot always rely on the "Rip-off Report", for example. Many times these are people that wanted someone to do it all for them and expected "magic" to happen and, when it didn't, they began to cry "scam! scam!" The final decision will ultimately be up to you.

 

10. Risk vs. Reward. This could also be looked at as comparing the "pros and cons". Yes, get out a sheet of paper (or do it on your computer) and make a list of the risks/cons as well as the rewards/pros. Is the REWARD big enough to overcome some of the RISK involved? Know this: There is ALWAYS risk involved in ANY situation like this. Again, the final decision will be yours.

 

***BONUS TIP: Do NOT go to some site for "Top Home Based Businesses"...you will get SWAMPED with emails and phone calls. They are only turning your information into a LEAD for people to buy. There is NO set up or "matching" you up with the "perfect" opportunity for you! Again, this is a way for companies to sell your information. Understand, too, that your information will NOT be sold only once. It will likely be sold five or more times and this could go on for months as your information gets recycled through "the lead system".

What Have YOU Spent $20 (U.S.) On This Week?

 

Many of you know that, from time to time, I check out different "opportunities" out there and, for the most part, I've been very disappointed in what I have found.

 

As a matter of fact, very soon I'm going to specifically mention two different "opportunities" that are flat-out scams. Yes, I will make sure you know EXACTLY what/who they are and why I say they are scams.

 

NOW THEN...

 

I've still always believed - even KNOWN - that there ARE "real" opportunities to make money and even a living doing something online. I know for a fact that there are people that do it every single day.

 

The problem is making your way through that "mine field" of all of the scams that are out there.

 

Now, let me say this up front: I do not know 100% how this opportunity I'm sharing with you in this article will turn out. I'm not going to promise anything or even suggest anything, as far as results.

 

Sound o.k. to you?

 

As a matter of fact, I'm even going to suggest to you that, when you watch the video that I have a link to below, that you not pay any attention to the "big numbers" that are presented as possibilities in the video. O.k.?

 

Here's the few things I DO want to mention to you and ask that you consider seriously:

     1. This is only a ONE TIME cost of $18 "out of pocket". You heard me right. This is not a "beginning cost" at some basic level that isn't worth two cents. (The video will explain how this works for you). Can you put more money into it? Sure you can. Some people, for example, put more $$ into it for advertising. I don't plan to do that - at least not for now - and you don't have to either. That would be 100% up to you. (That's why I have that $20 bill up at the top. Do you realize how quickly most of us spend $20?)

     2. What if it takes longer than the few weeks that is talked about in the video? WHO CARES? What if it took you a year to even reach the $100k amount, would that be o.k. with you? What if it even took two years to do that? Would that really matter to you? But, WHAT IF you were able to reach even that amount quicker than a year or two?

     3. As you'll see in the video, you're not trying to sell something or keep someone using something. It's simple and, the way I'm looking at it, THIS CAN BE A LOT OF FUN getting others involved and then watching this thing grow. LOOK AT HOW SMALL THE "RISK" IS!!!

     4. The "spill over effect" will help you fill up your spaces. Enough said about that. :)

     5. THIS IS GLOBAL! This is NOT limited to the United States so, those of you that are reading this from other countries (and I know I have a lot of people that do) should be able to participate.

     6. You don't have to "take care" of all the people that sign up under you or that get placed under you. NO BABYSITTING!

I'm always amazed at how many young people get so selective when looking for a summer job. It "boggles my mind" when I hear a young person say, "But I don't WANT to work at a fast food restaurant!" or "I don't WANT to mow yards!".

Even worse? An adult that will say pretty much the same thing while whining and complaining about not having a job.

OPPORTUNITIES come across our path each and every day. Sometimes they are BIG opportunities but, often, they are smaller opportunities that many of us either ignore or never pay attention to in the first place.

This seems to be true in this area of job or career opportunities. Just like I mentioned in the last article concerning how too many are waiting for the lottery jackpot to fall into their lap, so it is with too many waiting for their "dream job" to suddenly appear.

Remember, small opportunities can grow into big opportunities over time. (If you haven't read the last couple of articles, you really need to do that in order to be "on the same page" with me as I continue those thoughts in today's article).

Do a little research and find out how many people at the TOP of some companies began their journey at the very BOTTOM of that same company. They started "small", stuck with it and worked hard as they worded their way UP into a "larger" and better opportunity.

You never know what can come out of an opportunity to work. So what if it's not your "dream" job? You never know WHO you may meet along the way of working a job and you never know where that particular job may take you. You may find your "dream" job WITHIN this company by starting off with a "smaller" job opportunity.

We want it all NOW!

It's very similar to young couples getting married and wanting to move into a big house with nice furniture, etc. just like their parents had when they grew up. They don't realize that their parents worked YEARS to gain those things.

We live in an "instant" society and it spills over into our idea of work and employment.

GROW those opportunities that come your way! Don't ignore them and don't let them pass you by!

20/20 hindsight kicks me often about such situations. But, I can't go back - YOU can't go back - and relive the past. I (and you) must learn from the mistake of letting opportunities pass us by and be DETERMINED to not let that happen again.

The only way that happens is to KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN for those opportunities. I think they cross our path more often than we realize.

See what happens when you allow yourself to do what it takes to GROW those opportunities. I think you may very well surprise yourself!

You know what the "snowball effect" is, right?

 

The idea that a snowball, rolling downhill, gets more and more snow attached to it so that, when it reaches the bottom of the hill, it has increased in size dramatically.

We'll apply that to jobs and careers in the next article but, for today, we're going to apply the SNOWBALL EFFECT to opportunities with MONEY.

We ended the last article talking about people complaining that they don't have enough money or that they have no way to pay off debt or save any money for the future.

In RARE instances, that may be true. But I'm talking RARE.

More than likely you do not fit into that category and you DO have ways to pay off debt AND save money for the future.

The #1 thing you must do with this is to TAKE AN HONEST ACCOUNT of what is going on with your money. Notice that I said, "honest". Hey, listen, you can lie to yourself if you want but, friend, it's not going to help you and it's not going to change your situation. As a matter of fact, your situation will likely worsen due to your lack of honesty in this area.

*Ouch!*

Hey, it's time to get real here! You MUST be honest when looking at your money and where it is going. "Disappearing" is probably more like what seems to be happening, right?

Again, first and foremost you MUST stop paying money to everyone else (along with the high interest rates) through credit card payments, car payments, furniture rental, etc. No, I don't mean just stop paying. Get this debt paid off as quickly as possible so that you don't HAVE to pay!

"But Mike, how do I do that? I'm broke!"

Sure, you can go get another job but, friend, that's not really going to change anything because you will spend or waste that money as well. THAT'S A FACT! Yes, I do understand that there are SOME exceptions and that SOME people would actually apply that extra money the way that needs to be done. But, honestly, that likely is not you!

What can you do - TODAY - to save money that will not require you to work extra time or at an extra job?

1. STOP SMOKING! The average price of a pack (1 pack!) of cigarettes in the United States is $5.51 per pack. In a week, at ONLY 1 pack/day (I emphasize only because most smoke MORE than 1 pack per day) that comes up to $38.75 and, in a month, it comes up to a little over $150.  Oh, and in a year, just by smoking 1 pack of cigarettes a day, you have watched a little over $2,000 go up in smoke!

2. STOP EATING OUT SO MUCH! Oh, I know, I know...you're rushed and you HAVE to do that. No, you don't! I'm not saying that you have to stop eating out completely but, c'mon, how serious are you about this whole money thing? OPPORTUNITY is right in front of your face when you consider how much $$ you spend eating out over the course of a week. YOU do the math!

3. JUNK FOOD! Add it up yourself and see how much of your overall grocery bill is junk (chips, cookies and other sweets, soda, etc). Do you have to cut them out completely? No, but, I can almost promise you that you can cut out at least 90% of it right now.

I could go on and on on things that you could cut out of your budget. I haven't even started on your entertainment costs and how much you're paying just to watch television. But, hey, you might want to take a look at that as well.

All of those "small" things SNOWBALL into BIG EXPENSE for your wallet and, a lot of those listed also create a BIG EXPENSE on your health!

If you would do even those 3 things listed (or, if you don't smoke....find something else to replace it, like alcohol or the entertainment I mentioned), you will see how much extra money you will have to start applying toward some of your debt! And, all without having to get another job.

Small opportunities GROWING (the "snowball effect") into BIGGER opportunities!

What if you could do something and bring in just an extra $10 per week. Believe it or not, most people won't even consider something like that because "it's ONLY $10 per week".  But, listen, that extra $10 per week (without any kind of interest added to it) turns into an extra $40 per month, $520 per year and, after 5 years, it will bring you an extra $2,600!!

 

Small things that, done consistently, can and WILL become BIG things due to the "snowball effect" with your finances.

 

As always, this is up to YOU to make happen. It's not easy but, friend, if you are always short of money and have a lot of debt, consider it a NECESSITY.

Growing Opportunities - Part 1

As we discussed in the last article, opportunity is around us each day that we are alive. Sometimes we see it, sometimes we don't. And, there are even times that we see it but, for whatever reason, we still don't take advantage of that opportunity.

 

In this article, and the one to follow, we're going to take a look at growing FINANCIAL opportunities that are available to us on a daily basis. Then, we're going to apply those same principles to growing CAREER opportunities that are available to us as well.

 

First of all, too many people are waiting for that BIG opportunity to fall into their lap and ignore smaller opportunities that cross their path every day. Too many are waiting for the lottery to come their way and, waste away day after day and dollar after dollar chasing this big "dream".

 

I'm sure, like me, you've heard and/or read stories about school teachers that retired very wealthy. It was NOT because they got some HUGE award or MAJOR raise along the way. No, it was because they took advantage of the "little opportunities" that came their way to put away some of their paycheck for the future.

 

Some of you already don't like where this is headed and, friend, that is a problem. Too many people whine and complain about not having enough money and yet don't want to hear ANYTHING about cutting back or saving money in order to grow their earnings.

 

I once new an older gentleman that was not ashamed to stoop over and pick up pennies. Here's the contrast: the pennies were being thrown out on the car lot by a younger man that said he was "feeding the lot so that the lot would feed him". Stupid. This was a car sales lot where I worked at about fifteen years or so ago. The younger guy would throw out pennies every day and, from time to time the older gentleman would pick them up and put them in HIS pocket.

 

Did he get rich off of those pennies? No, but it was the MINDSET that he had that, I promise you, put him in a much better financial position than the fool throwing the pennies away on a daily basis.

Removal of debt is the #1 way that most - if not all - of us can INCREASE our financial wealth without having to go out and get a second (or third) job.

 

Yet, too many won't do that. I'm not saying you have to buy the course. What I AM saying is that too many people do NOT want to change anything and, yet,  they whine that they don't have enough money.

DAILY Opportunity

I read an article in a discussion forum earlier today entitled, "We Only Have One Opportunity in Life". There was a video attached and it was a good video featuring a very well-known man in the area of personal development.

 

That phrase WAS actually used in that video but, overall, the emphasis was about the fact that we have opportunities (plural) that come and go and that we have but one LIFE to live.

 

Now, I don't think the guy that wrote the article actually believed that there is only ONE opportunity in our life but, that's what the title read and, that being so, I felt the need to share my thoughts on the matter.

 

What did I say? "Absurd!"

 

Now, I was nice about it but I did want to make sure and point out that this idea was flawed. I did mention the things that I've already shared with you in this article in a way that didn't come across as an attack.

 

However, I wanted to be sure that ANYONE that read that article would NOT take it as fact.

 

Can you imagine believing that there was but ONE opportunity that comes our way in our life? What if you miss it? What then?

 

Friend, there are opportunities that come our way EVERY SINGLE DAY! That's one reason I specifically picked the graphic that you see above. Most of the graphics had the word, "opportunity" (singular) featured. But there are opportunities (plural) abundant in our life!

 

Sometimes we put too much emphasis on ONE opportunity missed. Sometimes we see people cry and bemoan the fact that they missed that opportunity and, in extreme situations, we actually see people take their own lives due to this fact.

 

That is really sad.

 

Yes, some opportunities are "bigger" than others but, friend, who is to say that there is not a "bigger" opportunity headed our way in the future?

 

Here's the deal: Live today with your eyes open for opportunity. Perhaps the opportunity to touch someones life with an act of kindness. Perhaps the opportunity to put a smile on the face of another. Perhaps opportunity in which you will never see the end result.

 

Every day. EVERY day.

 

And, friend, TODAY is one of those days! Take advantage of those opportunities that WILL come your way. And, as you do so, always be sure to...

You MUST Start!

I'm so glad that I had the chance to hear Zig Ziglar speak on two different occasions. The first time was around 32 years ago and the last time as a little over a year before he passed. Both were very different types of presentations but both were equally powerful.

 

The first time I heard Mr. Ziglar speak was at a time when he was still full of good health and vitality. He was all over that stage and on fire! The last time I got to hear him speak he was STILL all over that stage but at a much slower pace and with the help of his daughter. He was actually suffering from Alzheimer's and his daughter would have to keep him on track because he would often repeat something that he had already said. I will never forget at one point when his daughter said, "Daddy, you already told them that part." and, without missing a beat, Zig said, "Well, of course I did! I just don't think they got it the first time!"

 

You see, I took advantage of an OPPORTUNITY to hear Mr. Ziglar speak. It was a choice and it required a decision. And I'm so glad that I did. No one now has the chance to hear Mr. Ziglar speak at a live event anymore. Never. That can never happen again.

Another One of THOSE Days...

So, yeah...here we go again, right?

You've likely had this same conversation with yourself time and time again and, guess what keeps on happening?

TODAY just keeps on showing up!

The "comfortable" thing about putting things off until "tomorrow" is that "tomorrow" is always there. It never gets here because TOMORROW is always in the future.

But, when that time period that we call "tomorrow" arrives then it is called TODAY. So, to really look at this the way that it really is, TODAY is all that we have - there is no such thing as tomorrow.

I heard this once several years ago, "TODAY is the TOMORROW that you worried about YESTERDAY!"

Here's the thing - you know it, I know it, we all know it BUT we keep living the same way...waiting and planning and "putting off" until TOMORROW.

TODAY.

Whatever "it" is that you keep postponing until tomorrow or, even next week ("next week" still becomes TODAY sooner or later) must be faced and defeated and, friend, THAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN DO!

But it must be done today.

I think I've said that about enough because, for one, YOU are the only one that can get that done. I can encourage and point things out but, again, it's all up to YOU.
