Are YOU in CONTROL Without a "Plan B"?

At the end of my last article I asked the question (or similar): "What CONTROL do you have over your current situation/job?"

Sure, consider the obvious things such as being told when you can or cannot go to the restroom or take your lunch break. Depending on the schedule, do you even GET a lunch break? Wow, how about trying to schedule your vacation only to be told that you can't because of some "reason" that those "in charge" decide that they want to do first?

Are you able to participate in your child's school activities? Even if it's just trying to get off a little early to do so? How many days can you take off to take care of a child that is sick and has to stay home from school?

But let's go a little deeper on this thought...

What control do you have over actually KEEPING your job?

Yes, I understand that there is a LOT that you can do to make sure that you not only keep your job but get promoted with your job. A lot of people want to do the minimum and expect the maximum in benefits by doing so. It just doesn't work that way.

I'm referring more to situations like what I discussed in the last article and podcast about my own personal recent situation.

The bottom line - the TRUTH - is that you DON'T have control when it comes to the actions of those above you that could greatly impact your ability to keep your job. You DON'T have control over whether or not your company decides to shut down and move the company to a foreign country. You DON'T (and DIDN'T) have control over the government forcing your company to completely shut down which put you and everyone else out of work. For how long? Again, out of your control.

So, yes...you DO have some control over your own actions and abilities. Your habits and your work ethic. But, beyond that...how much control do you actually have?

The only real way to GET

(and maintain) control is

to TAKE control!

This may surprise you but, in this article, I have no solutions for you on this problem. I have no suggestions for you

Why? I honestly have yet to find something that has worked for me. Now, I know others that have done GREAT things with a "Plan B" and, yes, have also developed a "Plan C, D, E, F", etc.  I'm working on some things right now and...if they work out for me, I'll let you know.

Here's the thing: There is PLENTY of information out there about "side gigs" and putting together a "Plan B". Again, COVID really brought the need for such to the fore-front.

BOTTOM LINE: Don't wait to begin your search when you are under pressure to MAKE something happen! That generally will cause you to make poor decisions and it will also remove your ability to be patient with the process.

I do have something planned that might be of assistance to you in this area. I am currently working on a series entitled, "People of Passion" in which I will be interviewing a few people that I have connected with either personally or via online sources that have exhibited a sense of happiness and passion in their lives. Some of these are also involved in some "Plan B/Side Gig" opportunities and some are not. Be watching for that!

I'll leave you with this: "If you are not in control of (fill in the blank), chances are, someone else is."

Until then remember...

YOU'RE HERE FOR A REASON and, whatever you do, always be sure to...

"Make it an AWESOME day! (Who else is going to do it for you?)"

"Taking the Journey - What Route Will You Take?"

Whatever you do, be sure to check out the video cast (Vlog) as well as the podcast of this topic  by clicking on the appropriate links at the end of this article.

As we continue our analogy of "taking a journey" with what it is that you want to accomplish during this year, we now look at which "route" you will take in order to reach your destination.

Again, if you don't know where it is you want to go, how will you know when you get there?

Last time, we talked about which VEHICLE you would use for your journey and we talked about how it depended on the destination. You could walk, ride a bicycle, drive, ride a train, fly in an airplane and/or ride on a boat. And, you could actually do ALL of these on one journey!

Is there only ONE ROUTE to take in order to reach your destination? Not likely!
You may decide to take a leisurely approach to your journey so that you can stop and "see the sites" along the way. Your goal may not be so much "getting there" but, instead, enjoying the journey along the way to "getting there".

Or, for whatever reason, you may want to get to your destination as quickly as possible, even if it means driving all night!

Your reason for the trip (your "WHY") will greatly determine what route you take and at what pace/speed, right?

Just don't get the two confused! Here's what I mean - if you have told your family that you are going to take a leisurely trip so that all of you can enjoy some special sites and adventure and then, along the way, you decide you want to just "zoom" right past all of that so that you can save time, you will likely have a very unhappy family with you! Why? Because you said you were going to take one kind of journey and then actually took a very different kind of journey. What you SAID and what you DID were two different things.

On the other hand, if a family member calls you and tells you that another family member is deathly ill and that you need to get there as quickly as possible, what would you do? You would likely tell them that you would leave as soon as possible and get there as quickly as possible, right? But, what if along the way a sign for the world's BIGGEST ball of yarn caught your eye and you took a 50 mile round trip detour to go see it and then decided to stop off at a souvenir shop to commemorate that amazing sight? Would there be disappointment in you shown by your family members when you showed up many hours later than you could have and should have? OF COURSE!

When planning out your "route" it is important do make a decision as to what type of journey you wish this to be. Don't whine and complain about it taking too long to arrive at your destination if you have ended up having a leisurely attitude and approach toward reaching your destination.

Make sense?

But what if you got "off track" and didn't even realize it for quite a while? Is it too late to still reach your destination?

Yes...and no.

Join me next time as we discuss that important factor in reaching your destination.

Until then...

"Make it an AWESOME day! (Who else is going to do it for you?)"

Hangin' Around Like a Lost Pup?

What you see in the picture above is a shirt that my wife got for me a couple of years ago (maybe even three?) for Father's Day. Actually, it's one of two.

Why do I have a picture of the front of a shirt that my wife got for me a few years ago posted here? Because it is almost EXACTLY the same picture that I have used for our new travel business as a "cover photo" on our Facebook page!

"Oh, o.k.", you say but, let me tell you more. This whole "beach" scene that you see on the shirt and, if you go to the FB page that I talked about, is something that has been "hangin' around like a lost pup" for probably 10 years or so.

That's right, this type of picture has been my "dream image" for a very long time. It keeps popping up all over the place reminding me of this fact. On my other computer (where I do the mixing for my podcast) is a similar scene that I see nearly every day yet, it just "popped out" at me the other day. I can even go back and find images from, like I said, 10 years or so ago, and find the same type of picture.

The picture that I posted in yesterday's article from one of our vacations back in 2002 is one of my favorite all-time pictures. BEACH PICTURE!

Little did I or my wife know that, when she bought me this shirt (I actually picked it out and told her that would be a good gift) that we would now be promoting this type of picture as a REALITY!

Why do I bring all of this up? Because, friend, I want to ask you: WHAT IS YOUR DREAM IMAGE and WHERE HAS IT GONE?

Maybe you are right on track with it and getting closer to achieving it every day. Maybe you HAVE already achieved it and you are celebrating life due to that fact. But maybe, just maybe, you have lost your focus and allowed the weight of the world to cause you to put that "dream image" aside and pile a bunch of other stuff on top of it to where you don't even know it's there anymore.

Have YOU been getting little "pop up" reminders that it's still there? Have you ignored those reminders with the thought of, "Nah, it's just not going to happen"?

Have you ever actually had a lost pup hang around your house before? THEY DON'T GO AWAY SO EASILY! Maybe your "dream image" is not giving up so easily either, friend.

Perhaps you should allow yourself the privilege of opening your eyes, ears and mind to how many times this "lost pup" DOES actually "pop up" to remind you of what you once longed for and decided to strive for.

Allow that for yourself and, friend, you will then find yourself beginning to dream again and even beginning to believe that it IS possible after all.

Please be sure to check out our Facebook travel page and, while you're at it, "LIKE" it and leave a comment. You may even be entered into a contest to actually WIN a vacation on us. Shoot, you can even go there and post YOUR "dream image" if you'd like. Or, if you prefer, you can post it on my Future You University Facebook page.

Either way, stop ignoring that lost pup, would ya', and begin to dream and live once again.

Until next time, be sure to...

Make Memories Now

The picture above was taken on a vacation that my family and I took to South Padre Island, Texas back in 2002. That is actually a picture of my family with my wife sitting in the chair and my three sons standing side by side on the right.

Up until that time we had not really been on a "real" vacation, know what I mean? Yes, we had made some trips to places like St. Louis, MO. to watch a Cardinals baseball game and to go to Six Flags and to let the boys spend a lot of time in the hotel pool. If you have kids or your kids are grown, then you know how just being in a pool all day makes a vacation for them!

Sure, we all had fun on those other trips but, do you know which one is still talked about to this day? You got it, the one from the picture.

It was different from what we had ever done before and it offered us new experiences with our sons. It was also the first time that we had actually taken a full 2 weeks for a vacation. Usually I would take 1 week out of my "allowed" 2 weeks at one time. But (I'm sure you've experienced this as well) taking only a week makes it hard to travel very far without feeling like you need another vacation to recover FROM your vacation once you return home.

On this trip, my wife and I also decided that we were going to let each son pick out something that they wanted to do that was not dependent on anyone else's likes or dislikes. Our oldest son, Jacob, decided he wanted to learn how to wind surf so we allowed him to take lessons for that while we were there. He loved it. Our middle son, Jeremy, decided he wanted to go parasailing with his mom and, though he wanted to back out for a brief moment as he was being lifted into the sky (they were doing this tandem) he - and my wife - absolutely loved it. Our youngest son, Jordan, decided that he wanted to ride go carts all by himself WITHOUT his brothers on the course with him. It ended up that, when we took him to the track, he was the only person on the whole track. He loved it!

Here's the thing, though...I didn't have the money to take that vacation. Bottom line is that I didn't handle my money well and, due to that, I always seem to be coming up short. (That is a whole different story for a whole different blog article). Like most people (or a lot of them) I had to borrow the money to take this trip.

Was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY.  I have never regretted taking that trip nor have I ever regretted borrowing the money to do so. This vacation has brought about life-long memories that my family and I STILL talk about to this very day, twelve years later.

Oh, and those boys in the photo above? Our oldest son, Jacob is now 30, married with 2 young children of his own. As a matter of fact, he and his wife, Beth, celebrated their 8th wedding anniversary yesterday. And, our "middle" son, Jeremy, is now 27. He and his wife, Cassidy, celebrated their 6th wedding anniversary just a couple of weeks ago. And Jordan, our youngest, is now 23.

It's hard to believe that my sons are this age and at these various stages of their lives! But, friend, it happens quicker than we realize and, again, I urge those of you that have children at home to take in and soak up every minute of it. As a song sung by Trace Adkins says, "You're Going to Miss This" one of these days. "This" being things that we take for granted and sometimes grumble about.

What's my point?

For one, it is important for you to do all that you can to create MEMORIES - good ones - TODAY! Sure, it doesn't have to be some trip as I have described (who can do that every day?) but they can be created every day just by being there for your kids. Little, silly traditions that you create with your family. Special nicknames that you may have for them. Today is here and then it is gone.

Secondly, as I've shared with you the past couple of articles, you don't always have to go into debt or save for such a long time in order to take special trips that will create life long memories. My wife and I have started a travel business that offers special travel packages that allows you to travel for, literally, pennies on the dollar. Check out our travel Facebook page  for MJ Spillman Travel.

And, hey, if you've never listened to that song by Trace Adkins that I mentioned, look it up, take notice of the lyrics and let it sink in.

Thanks for allowing me to share some special memories with you, friend. Memories that I am so glad that I was determined to make happen.

Until next time, be sure to...

Learning To Live OR Waiting to Die?

Read the graphic and then read (or re-read) the title and ask yourself about BOTH of them, "Is that such an odd question?"

The fact is, friend, that it is NOT an odd question at all because many people are just "existing" and not truly living and loving life.

I don't know about you but I think that is just sad. And unnecessary.

Too many people have given up on their dreams long ago and have just "accepted" a life that is far less than what they had envisioned.

Did you know that TRAVEL is one of the most remembered and most enjoyed activities that individuals and families participate in? Special trips and vacations create LIFE-LONG memories that can bring smiles on faces for years and years into the future.

Yet, most people never travel or they have to save for years in order to do so. Oh, they may "travel" but it's usually to visit a relative somewhere. Know what I mean?

Let me ask you a question: In today's blog, would you rather me talk about DEATH or LIVING LIFE? Would you rather talk about FUNERALS or FUN?

Now those ARE odd questions!

A couple of years ago I was working in the life insurance industry. Don't anyone get all worked up with what I'm going to talk about because - right up front let me say that life insurance is INDEED a needed and valuable product that should be taken advantage of by ANYONE and EVERYONE that can do so! Get it? Got it? GOOD!

However, I struggled with it and didn't do very well. It just wasn't me, know what I mean? Information will tell you that, even though are many successful agents that sell life insurance, most people (even though they realize and understand that they DO need it) don't want to talk about it. Think about it, they will talking about DEATH and, more specifically, their OWN death and what will happen after they are gone. Necessary? ABSOLUTELY! But not much fun to talk about.

So, I will leave that to others to do that part of life - or the end of it!

Me? I'd rather talk about "living life" and "fun"!

My wife, Janan, and I have recently started a travel business selling travel packages that offer incredible deals. We are determined to help get people traveling and making those life-long memories NOW while they still can. We are determined to help get people out of the house and LIVING LIFE before they can no longer do so.

So let me direct you to the information for YOU to consider taking advantage of this. I thank you in advance for taking a look and sharing the information with others.

GO HERE to access our travel Facebook page. We have a special promotion going on for all those who "LIKE" this page between now and midnight CST on Thursday, July 31, 2014. For every 100 "likes" we will be giving away one trip. That's right, 1 trip for every 100 likes! NOTICE: You must ALSO leave a comment in order to be entered into the drawing. (You can also find a couple of videos that show just how big the savings can be!).

GO HERE to read up on our current special promotions. Besides the promotion that I just mentioned in the above paragraph, we also have a SPECIAL PROMOTION going on for anyone that becomes a customer between now and 9:00 p.m. CST on Thursday, July 31, 2014. GO HERE to check out all of our products, read some testimonials as well as see how many businesses use these trips as incentives for their employees and also as appreciation for their customers.

Bottom line is this: IF you feel that you are not really "living life" then ask yourself what is it going to take to change that? Get real and get serious with yourself on this and remember, "As long as there is breath, there's hope!". Every day that you are alive is a day to be LIVED. Every day that you are alive is a day to LOVE and to BE LOVED.

Don't forget that and, contact me if you'd like to talk about it...I'll do what I can to help!

And, as always, as you go about each and every day "LIVING LIFE", be sure to...

"Make it an AWESOME day! (Who else is going to do it for you?)"

Ordinary or EXTRAordinary?

I actually was looking up the definition of the word, "extraordinary" on dictionary.com to share with you in today's blog but then I thought, "You know what? Just point out the obvious!"

And the obvious definition is simply this: NOT ORDINARY or MORE than ordinary!

Here's something else to consider: many will have a different definition of what it is to be EXTRAordinary simply due to the fact that "ordinary" is lived, shown, defined in different ways based on the surroundings.

For example, if you make $200,000 a year and you find yourself among multi-millionaires, you will find it hard to be considered "extraordinary" financially. However, in a group of most "average" and, yes, "ordinary" salaried employees, you may very well be looked at as financially "extraordinary".

You've heard it said many times before that we tend to "fit in" along the lines of our 5 or 10 closest acquaintances. This is true financially but it is also true in the way that we live life. Those 5 or 10 people will highly influence the way that we look at what it means to "play it safe" or take a risk and step out. Your way of thinking in what it means to just "fit in" and not "rock the boat" with thoughts and ideas is highly molded by those that you are closest to.

What do YOU want?

How do YOU want to live?

What is the "norm" in your situation? What is ordinary?

Many settle for going to work, coming home, sitting in front of the television until time to go to bed and then getting up in the morning and doing the exact same thing all over again. Day in and day out.

I guess I'm kind of "tip-toeing" around on this one because I know a lot of people that are very happy in their lives. I'm not talking about those that I described in the preceding paragraph, but others that find ways to make their lives MORE than just sitting in front of a television set.

So, in their own way, they have chosen to live an extraordinary life!

How do they do what they do? Perhaps they make an extra effort to earn more or maybe they just save more. Whatever it is, they have found a way to add a little something EXTRA to their lives to keep it from being mundane and ordinary!

It doesn't have to be going on an "around-the-world" trip or a two month cruise.

It may be stepping out and starting a new business from home OR it may be stepping out and learning a new hobby or planning a trip to somewhere that you have never been before.

I don't know but YOU can figure it out based on your own life and where you are.

This can be the fun part BEFORE the fun part - planning to do something out of the ordinary for you...something EXTRAordinary!

Why live life any other way?

Don't wait for others to do it for you. Instead...

Refuse to Turn Back!

Hopefully you are familiar with the movie "Vacation" that I have referred to in an earlier article because I'm going to refer to it again! (Not to mention that it's one of my favorite movies!).

If not, I'll put together a very short recap of the movie: A family of 4 travels cross country with all kinds of set backs and unplanned "adventures" only to arrive at the theme park that they had planned to enjoy and find that it was temporarily closed.

What would YOU do?

Seriously, even if you are not familiar with the movie at all, I want you to imagine such a scenario and ask yourself what you'd do. Would you just get back in your car and drive back across the country without even trying to figure out a way to at least see what the problem is with this placed being closed?

Now, if you ARE familiar with the movie you may not go to the extent that Clark Griswold went to in the movie but, at the same time, you can likely understand his actions, right?

My wife and I did experience a very similar situation a few years back. We had planned to spend several days at a resort and had called about 5 days earlier and got everything set up. When we arrived at the resort the big gate was closed and it, too, had a "we're closed" sign on the gate. Yes, I DID feel like Clark Griswold! Friends, I was not about to just drive away from the gate without talking to someone! There was a box by the gate that would allow me to talk to someone to open the gate and let me in when things were "normal" in this situation.
Anyway, to get to the point, I pushed the button on that box and left messages again and again until someone finally came to the gate to talk to me. I actually left a message that told them that I was NOT going to leave until someone came up to talk to me! And they did.
Bottom line, they had some unforeseen issues arise since I had gotten everything set up that was completely out of their control. I was still not happy and I let them know that someone should have contacted me but, what was I to do?
After being assured that nothing would be charged to my credit card we simply moved on and made alternative plans! But, I was NOT going to go back home just because of that set back!

What does this have to do with YOU trying to reach your goals and dreams?

EVERYTHING!

Refuse to quit  - Refuse to turn back!

Regardless of the roadblocks and unplanned "adventures" that will be a challenge - REFUSE TO TURN BACK!

Even if the "gate" is closed after your long journey.

We'll talk more specifically about that in the next article. Be sure to join me!

And, as you go along your day be sure to...

"Make it an AWESOME day! (Who else is going to do it for you?)"

Survive or Thrive (Part 2)

Be sure to check out my last blog before you read this one. I think you can figure out the reason why, right? (Because it's the first part in this two-part series, just in case you're a little sleepy or something.).

I covered pretty extensively the idea behind "simply surviving".

This time I will focus on the other side of this equation: THRIVE!

Dictionary.com defines the word "thrive" as follows:
thrive [thrahyv] verb (used without object) 1. to prosper; be fortunate or successful. 2. to grow or develop vigorously; flourish

Now, I don't know about you - but I still bet I'm right on this - but I like the way THAT sounds a lot better than the idea of "simply surviving". Am I right?

Like everything else in life this is a CHOICE that we make in our lives and about our lives. Sure it is! We've got to finally wake up to the fact that, for the most part, our life is what it is due to CHOICES that you and I have made.

So, you decide whether you want to "simply survive" or if you want to "prosper, be fortunate or successful". YOU decide whether or not you "simply survive" or flourish!

It IS a choice and you DO have the ability to do more than survive, my friend. It's true!

Life can be exciting, fun and fulfilling when you choose to THRIVE and not "simply survive".

How? Open your eyes and look around you, my friend. Get in touch with me on some ideas (mike@futureyouuniversity.com) or go to one of my websites (MichaelSpillman.com) for some ideas as well.

Choose to LIVE life!

And as you go about it, be sure to...

"Make it an AWESOME day! (Who else is going to do it for you?)"

Update: I DO Plan To...

Just a quick update: I DO still plan to do the video an audio addition to my current "series" that I am doing on PLANS and things that can HOLD US BACK.

Isn't that ironic?

I planned to do it right after I completed my last blog article (which was about 3 weeks ago). I also planned to get it done about a week ago while I had several days off.

But, as you can see, I've still yet to complete those. My plans? I still plan to get that accomplished THIS WEEK - hopefully over the next day or two.

So, here's something to think about when considering the thought brought up in the last article of "WHAT'S HOLDING YOU BACK?".... do we sometimes consider ourselves "busy" or "too busy" to do what it is we SAY we want to accomplish?

Hmmmm....interesting.

Stay with me? Thanks!

Until next time, be sure to...

TIME: Don't Have vs. Don't Take

(be sure to check out the podcast on iTunes or on the RSS feed)

"I would but I just don't have the time!"

How many times have you either SAID that or HEARD that said? As a matter of fact, take a moment and try to think of when the last time YOU said this phrase occurred...was it sometime today? Yesterday? We likely say something along this lines way more often than we realize.

Many times we say this to our kids when they are seeking our help and/or attention but we are busy with something else..."Mom! I need you to help me!" "Not now honey, I don't have time!" We don't want to sound like bad parents by saying what is actually true which would be, "Not now honey, I'm not going to TAKE the time for you right now."

Is that bad? No! Listen parents, there is no way in the world that we can devote all 24 hours a day to our children - IT'S NOT POSSIBLE! Now listen, if you're sitting in front of the t.v. eating Cheetos and watching a soap opera when your kid asks for your help and you say you don't have time - SHAME ON YOU! That's right... I said it.

But, if you are busy with something that helps the family (cleaning the house, balancing the checkbook or paying the bills, etc.), then there is nothing wrong with actually saying, "I can't take the time right now."

So many times we say we don't HAVE the time when, in reality, we simply choose to not TAKE the time. So, the question actually is this: What are you TAKING the time for during your day?

This SHOULD be obvious but it still needs pointing out - we ALL have the same amount of time every day. We ALL have 24 hours a day, divided up by hours, made up of 60 minutes, made up of 60 seconds each. It doesn't matter how rich or poor you are and it doesn't matter where in the world you live - TIME IS THE SAME FOR US ALL!

Here's what I want you to do to start this series off for the week - get out another piece of paper like you did during last week's series. Go ahead, get that paper and something to write with and write this across the top of that paper....

IF I HAD TIME, I WOULD...

Do that and then start writing things down - WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Don't over-think this, o.k.? Just write down what you would do IF you "had the time".

No, this isn't a trick. Take a few minutes and do this and feel free to add to it as you go through your day. DO NOT THROW THIS PAPER AWAY! Hang on to it - I will be coming back to it later on in the week.

Many times we don't want to hear the truth behind this fact but it's still true: THE TIME IS THERE!

I hope you'll join me the rest of the week as we go though and discover the time that is already in our day that we may be able to use for those things that we've always wanted to do.

Be thinking about that - fill out that list on that piece of paper and, in the meantime, whatever you do, where ever you go, be sure to...

"Make it an AWESOME day! (Who else is going to do it for you?)"
